| We've gone a couple of weeks without a
death among our exes but we lost Mable Callaway McCoy, Class of 1933 on
April 4, 2008. Our condolences to her family as we know she will
surely be missed. A brother among our exes survives, J. E. Callaway,
Class of 1938 of Beaumont.
We received a cute e-mail from Timi Wood, Class of 1982 of New Braunfels asking for help finding our website. The website is usually listed at the end of each article but just in case, it's www.thorndale.txed.net. When you get there, click on the ex-students link and then on the news link. On the school page which is the first page, there are so many links and so much good "stuff". Do check it out if you haven't already done so. Nice big colored photo of Marie Cuba Freiling, Class of 1952 of Rockdale in the newspaper presenting the Yard of the Month given by the Linwood Acres Garden Club. Exes dad, Lamond Culp, brought another year book by the house to donate to our organization. We really appreciate this and our thanks to Lamond for thinking of us. It's a 1948 annual and in very good condition. A real asset to our memorabilia which is always displayed so nicely at Homecoming both on Friday night and Saturday by our Historian, Evelyn Beard Young, Class of 1953 of Rockdale. There was a good picture in the newspaper of the Reading Club and in the photo is Carole Camp Simank, Class of 1957. They toured the Harry Ransom Center in Austin and saw the Gutenberg Bible which is on display there. That must have been a great trip. We found another one of our "lost" exes this past week or he found us. Received the nicest e-mails from one of our ex-neighbors, Brian Caffey, Class of 1983 along with address and more. It was great to find him again and really good to visit via the internet. He reads our articles on the internet and that's good. He wants to receive any of our mailings like Homecoming invitation and class reunion information. His son has enlisted in the Army and going into the Special Forces program, but he wants to be in the Infantry. Either way, we are so lucky that these young men are willing to join any branch of the military to protect our freedoms and we wish him well. There were some great colored photos in the newspaper of the VFW Annual Barbecue Cookoff. Stormin Norman's Russell Niemtschk, Class of 1976 placed in almost every category. He was the overall grand champion. Other exes placing in the top 10 of their category were Colby Fisher, Class of 1999 and Breanda Leschber Niemtschk, Class of 1985. Our congratulations to all. We know our high school students, both girls and boys, are great athletes and the evidence is in the trophy cases at the school. But, they are academically exceptional, too. Our speech team placed first at Regional UIL competition and this qualifies them to go to the state competition. We placed first in Lincoln-Douglas debate and first in persuasive speaking and two will go as alternates. We can't ask for more than that from our students and we are so proud of them. Thorndale High School is always well represented. The 2008 class is now on our rosters but won't be exes until they graduate. We do welcome them to our organization. We picked up our 2500 postage stamps for our Homecoming invitations. Remember, Homecoming is October 17 and 18 this year so mark your calendars. Tiffany Gerren, Class of 2002 is now Tiffany Parker as of April 19, 2008. We even got her address change off of the invitation sent to the Ernest Patschkes and we thank them for letting us have this information. Tiffany received the Grace Davis Berry Memorial Scholarship and has been attending college. Our congratulations to Tiffany and her husband and we send them our good wishes. |
