PRIDE OF SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
The phenomenal growth of the program of the music department of the Thorndale Public Schools is reflected in the goal reached at the time of this publication (1951).

Be it said to the credit of Supt. Roy C.A. Butler (now deceased) and to the Board of Education that this achievement could not have been accomplished, but for the vision and wizdom of these officials who instituted this program beginning with the school season of 1949, when both instrumental and vocal music became a part of the over all comprehensive schedule of courses.

Starting with no band instruments and with only two students with band experience, today there are forty-three members composing the band, forty-five new maroon and gold uniforms and a music hall which compares favorably with the best in Texas. The value of instruments, uniforms, music library and building reaches a substatial sum, estimated at $4,500.

In view of the fact that the Department of Education of Texas plans to make music compulsory for education, when music teachers are available, the school officials have planned early, wisely, and well.

The band has performed at various funtions including football and basketball games, assemblies, concerts, at two Band Days sponsored by the University of Texas, parades in Cameron and Thorndale, as well as several street concerts.

All in all the creditable progress and goals reached, testify to the attainments for which the school and community are very proud.
