Introduction

At different times of the year, people suffer from allergies.  Allergies can cause us to be miserable.  Some of the symptoms of allergies can include wheezing, coughing, itching and watering eyes.  Are they life threatening? Can they make us sick?  Research the web to find the answers to these questions and many more.

Task

Many of your classmates will have allergies or know someone who does.  In this lesson you will research the causes and symptoms of allergies, write the effects allergies have on your respiratory system, and examine the parts of the respiratory system.

Process and Resources

Students will work in pairs for this activity.  Each student will share the responsibility of investigating, reading, and recording all answers to questions. The first three questions will be found in the first web site listed, and the last three questions will be found on the second web site listed. Click here to print the worksheet.

Evaluation

1.  Give three examples of common allergens.
2.  What is one symptom of allergies not mentioned above?
3.  What are the best pets for a person who is allergic to animals?
4.  Do you have allergies?  If so, what are you allergic to?
5.  What is another name for the windpipe?
6.  What is asthma?
7.  How many lungs do you have?

Conclusion

After completing the research on allergies and the respiratory system, the students will report their findings using the worksheet.

Extension
