Alumni Feature - Summer Odom

Thorndale ISD proudly highlights Dr. Summer Odom, Class of 1995—an accomplished alumni whose path has led from the excitement of Friday night lights to the academic halls of Texas A&M University. During her time at Thorndale High School, Summer stood out as a dedicated student and leader, actively participating in cheerleading, volleyball, basketball, track, Future Homemakers of America, band, National Honor Society, cross-examination debate, and 4-H. Her ability to balance academics, leadership roles, and a wide range of extracurricular activities set the foundation for an exceptional future.
Summer graduated from Texas A&M University in 1999 with a degree in Food Science & Technology, later earning a master’s in Agricultural Education and a Ph.D. in Human Resource Development, all from Texas A&M. Her educational journey included internships at The Minute Maid Company in Houston and Americana Foods in Dallas, experiences that added depth to her academic and professional development.
Her career in higher education began as an advisor and lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, & Communications at Texas A&M. Today, she is a tenured Associate Professor in that same department, where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate leadership courses and conducts research in leadership education.
A particular passion for Summer is her work with #FirstGenVets, a program that supports veterans at Texas A&M who are also the first in their families to attend college. As a first-generation college student herself, Summer finds deep purpose in helping these students navigate their college experience. To date, she has taught over 2,000 students, leaving a lasting impact on future leaders.
Her dedication and excellence have earned her multiple honors, including the President’s Award for Academic Advising, the Association of Former Students College Teaching Award, and the Dean’s Excellence Award for Service.
In 2008, she married Len Odom, and after living in Bryan, Texas for over a decade, the couple moved back to Thorndale to raise their daughter. The family is active in the St. Paul Lutheran Church and School community, and Summer serves on several church and school committees.
Reflecting on her time at Thorndale, Summer recalls,
“I remember being a cheerleader when our football team won the state championship. I didn’t realize how special that was until I left and began to understand how unique our school and community really are.” She fondly remembers crafting run-through signs with friends and teachers who shaped her: Mrs. Culp, Mrs. Doherty, Mrs. Winkler/Thiele, Mr. Green, and Mr. Hoines, to name a few.
“I was told I wouldn’t be prepared for Texas A&M, but I was—because of those teachers and the peers around me. I think six of our graduating class of 37 went on to earn degrees from Texas A&M,” she notes with pride.
Summer's advice to current students is heartfelt and wise:
“Take advantage of being in a small school where you can explore a variety of interests, surrounded by people who truly care about your success. Soak in every moment and enjoy the experience. And never let the size of your school limit the size of your dreams—sometimes, coming from a small town sets you up for even greater things ahead.”
Dr. Summer Odom’s journey is a testament to what’s possible when strong roots meet bold ambition. Thorndale ISD is proud to call her one of our own.
