Alumni Feature - Dale Caffey

For Dale Caffey, a proud member of the Thorndale High School Class of 1977, the lessons learned in the halls of Thorndale ISD helped shape a career dedicated to communication, storytelling, and serving others.
During his time at Thorndale High School, Dale was actively involved in football, basketball, tennis, band, one-act play, and debate. The experiences and relationships he built as a Bulldog laid the foundation for a successful professional journey that would impact communities across Central Texas.
After graduating from Thorndale High School, Dale earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1981. He then spent more than a decade as a sportscaster for KCEN-TV in Waco-Temple, where he covered thousands of athletic contests and interviewed countless coaches and athletes. While many recognized him for his work in front of the camera, it was the skills and knowledge he gained behind the scenes that would lead him to the next chapter of his career.
In 1992, Dale was hired by the City of Waco to create a government access television station. Two years later, he joined Waco ISD to establish an education access television station focused on strengthening communication between schools and the community. In 2001, he became Waco ISD's Director of Communications, a role he held until his retirement from the district in 2015. Throughout his career in education, Dale focused on highlighting students and sharing the positive stories taking place within schools. After retiring from Waco ISD, he spent several years working for FedEx Express before fully retiring in 2023.
Dale credits much of his success to the people and experiences that shaped him in Thorndale.
"God has truly blessed my life with experiences I could never have dreamed about as I walked the hallways of Thorndale ISD," he shared. "I am very proud to proclaim that it was the hallways, classrooms, educators, coaches, administrators, lunch ladies, custodians, classmates and, of course, my parents who shaped me into the person I became."
He fondly remembers many educators who made a lasting impact on his life, including Superintendent B.C. Sims, Principal J.E. Weaver, Coach Mike Chancey, Coach Bud Gray, band directors Carolyn Willard and Gordon Lockhart, and teachers Wayne Green, Howard Leshikar, Mary Leshikar, Linda Culp, and Malda Burns.
Today, Dale considers his greatest blessings to be his family. He and his high school sweetheart, Shelley Merkord, will celebrate 44 years of marriage this July. Together they have two children, Jared and Erica, both working in the medical profession, and two grandsons, Cayden and Copelan.
Looking back, Dale treasures the memories he made as a Bulldog and the lifelong friendships formed with his classmates. His advice to current Thorndale students is simple but powerful:
"Thank God each day for His grace and mercy, study hard, listen to your teachers, be kind, and most of all, enjoy the special moments. Those memories will last a lifetime."
Thorndale ISD is proud to celebrate Dale Caffey and the impact he has made throughout his career and community. His story serves as a reminder that the values learned in a small-town school can lead to extraordinary opportunities and a lifetime of service.
